Business starter scheme

Rationale and planning

images/sheep_farm_msg.jpg
A small amount of money can be a huge enabler for someone that wants to start a self-sustaining business. We saw that in 2023 when we helped Mrs MA start a sheep and goat rearing business. Two years later, this business is thriving and it has made a huge difference to her livelihood. Her son sent us this pic last month, and told us that his mum says the sheep farm has changed her life. It has allowed her to pay her electricity bills and buy food.

Repeating the scheme

There are several possibilities, and we will select two or three of them in an open and transparent application process.

  • We received several enquiries from farmers in Aframano. Costs include fencing materials, materials for constructing a shed, fertiliser, seeds, and possibly livestock.

  • Some apprentices (not necessarily ours) may be ready to start working independently. Here, the typical cost is for a lock-up container shop like the one pictured, or tools.

We will fund one or two more starting businesses. Budget: £4K.

Application process

An application form will be released towards the end of 2025, with a closing date of 31 December. The form will require description of past experience in the proposed business activity, and full details of how the money will be spent, and how the business will become self-sustaining. The expected budget will be £500-£1000, but in exceptional cases it could be £2000. Shortlisting will occur during January, with interviews in February. The interview panel will consist of Mark Ryan, Kwasi Alare, and one other to be decided.
