Maintaining our apprenticeship scheme

Rationale and planning

Since 2024, Turbo Ghana has been running an apprenticeship scheme in and around Nsuta, paying young people a monthly stipend while they learn a trade from an experienced local tradesperson. What started with four apprentices has grown steadily: we now have sixteen apprentices training in electrical wiring, tailoring, tiling, and masonry.

This project is not about expanding the scheme. It is about raising the funds needed to keep our current apprentices supported through to the end of their training. The main cost is the monthly stipend of 600 GHC (about £40) per apprentice. Vivian Danso coordinates the scheme, collecting a monthly report from each trainer before the stipend is released.

What we propose

We will continue to pay each apprentice their monthly stipend until they complete their training and graduate. Graduations are formalised in Ghana: each trade has an association that examines apprentices and confers graduation. We also cover the cost of tools and the graduation itself.

The total cost of maintaining the current sixteen apprentices for the current year (£40 * 16 + tools + graduation costs) graduations is approximately £10,000.
